He generally uses mixed mediums such as Oil paint, Oil pencil pastels and mineral leafing (Gold, Silver and Copper). His inspirations come from political issues relating cultural identity and Native American civil rights. Patrick has been painting since 1992 but has always had an artistic personality and won Best of Show at the Ziibwing Cultural Society in 2001 and was the 2002 Winter Olympics Mural recipient for the Discover Navajo Foundation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePatrick has several other award winning pieces on display throughout the Great Lakes region. He received an Associates of AFA in Studio Arts degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in the spring, 2020 and currently has several pieces in the Faust Gallery in Santa Fe New Mexico.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cu\u003eArtist Statement\u003c\/u\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’m a painter at heart but have worked in many different mediums throughout the years. As an Ojbwe, I have used self-expression through art to bring awareness about Native American issues to a worldwide audience. I use portraits as a focal point and then create more loose abstract imagery for the secondary part of the story. Working with bright colors, which reflect the beauty of my culture and to bring in enlightenment of cultural biasness to breakdown the stereotypes of Anishinaabe (Original People) of this land.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the years I’ve explored different mediums to create a style that works best for each individual paintings. Color is everything! For example, my previous work of the MMIW series shows red handprints across each individuals face. The handprint represents a specific idea but the collaboration of red brings the context to a complete political format. Some paintings are vibrant with a very diverse color scheme and some are simplified with cooler earth tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI want the viewer to feel and have a personal connection to the imagery in my paintings. For example, when I paint an image of a political portrait, I make sure the model I’m using shows the exact self-expression or gesture that I’m looking for. Without this, the painting tells a completely different story. The objects I use outside the focal point has to relate in a very specific way as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePainting has given me the confidence to express myself openly to others who aren’t aware of the many issues Native Americans deal with in a contemporary society. Self-expression through art has also been a form of healing for me.
